Dental Discount Plans - Cost Advantages

By Jared J. Balis

The Difference

Dental discount plans have many advantages over dental insurance coverage. The main advantage is, if you are your family have an occasional need for dental service and get regular cleanings, dental discount plans can save you a lot of money.

Discounts on Most Dental Services

The small amount you pay for you or your family each year goes to pay for access to good discounts on many dental services. Some people choose not to purchase dental insurance because the cost is too high, especially if you don't use your plan. Discount programs are a good alternative to going uninsured for your dental care. Because you have the discounts available to you for services such as cleaning, cavities, and major dental services, when you do go in for regular checkups, or unexpected dental work, you stand to save quite a bit on the final bill.

Low Plan Cost

Dental Insurance Example: My family and I were on a local dental insurance plan a while back that we paid $68.00 per month for. That's $816.00 per year in premiums! We even had a cheap plan, compared to most. We all four had two cleanings each, which would have cost us around $100 per person, or $400 total. Because I had insurance, it only cost us $80 for the cleanings. My son had to have a crown, which cost $300 because our dental insurance didn't allow us to go to a pediatric dentist, but only a general dentist. We chose to go to a pediatric dentist and pay out of pocket. The bottom line is that I paid $816 + $80 + $300, which equaled $1,196 in dental expenses for that year.

Discount Program Example: Had we been on a discount program that year, I would have only spent $189 for the plan fee, $200 for the cleanings, and $150 for the crown. That would have been $539 for the whole year for dental expenses. Had my son not needed the crown, it would have only cost us $389.

If you have teeth that need work on a constant basis, you might be better off with insurance, but if you only go for cleanings and the occasional filling or crown, a dental discount plan will likely put you or your family money ahead each.
