Take
Charge of Your Dental Treatment - And Your Fears!
By Blaise Breton
Your stomach starts to churn and you feel a bit queasy when you think
about getting that aching tooth 'fixed'. You hold out as long as you can
but finally the pain becomes too much to bear. Over time, it has worsened
from a sharp jab when you chew on the wrong side or take a big swig of a
cold drink. Now it is a steady "Thrum, Thrum" of pain, throbbing away day
and night. Your face has become a bit puffy and no amount of aspirin,
Tylenol, or Motrin takes away that grinding, burning pain.
You're sure not alone in your misery. Over 150 million Americans do not
get regular dental care and the reason is not the cost - it is their fear
of the dentist or a procedure. Most of these people have a legitimate
reason for their dread and apprehension, which is usually based on a
particularly painful experience with a dentist. Maybe they have a
resistance to Novocaine or one of the local anesthetics favored by
dentists. It has finally been recognized that this is a reality for some
patients and the usual dosage that is adequate for most patients is no
where near sufficient in removing the very real pain that is suffered by
these people. Maybe the dentist did not explain a frightening procedure
and the patient was literally trapped in the dental chair, enduring it
through to the end. Possibly, their fears and apprehensions were ridiculed
and not taken seriously by the dentist or his staff. Being embarrassed
hardly makes for a pleasant experience at the dentist!
There are some steps that you can take when you finally have to face
that trip to the dentist. True, you might be writhing in pain and just
want relief but you will still be aware of the way you are treated. If
you're fortunate enough to be able to muster up the courage to schedule
treatment before that tooth is screaming a "Code Five - Alert!", you will
have time to take charge. Decide that you are going to find a dentist that
you can trust; you want to find someone with a bit of compassion and
understanding. You need a dentist who will get the job done, do it well,
and who will knock out the pain while he works. You want a dentist who
won't send you screaming from the office; someone who understands your
fears and can help calm that dread.
So take the first step. Do your walking - not out of the dentist's
office but through the Yellow Pages. Sleep Dentistry may be the answer for
you. Give yourself a chance to find out about this humane method that
takes care of your dental problems while handling the accompanying fears.
Do you know anyone else with similar anxiety about dental care? If you do,
ask about their dental care provider. If they have none, maybe you can
both make an appointment to talk to a professional who specializes in
sleep dentistry. After all, two minds are better than one and you can both
ask questions. Since misery also loves company, a fellow fearful sufferer
can share his opinions and ideas after your initial visit.
Take charge of your dental treatment and know that you "Don't have to
take it anymore!" Sleep Dentistry can be the answer. Become an activist
for your own cause and make an appointment with a specialist to get some
answers!
